Crescent

Crescent experiments with the idea of mapping breathing. Breathing is our oscillation, rhythm and basic, repetitive movement that affects, and is affected by, every aspect of existence. The idea extends to our cycles through life, cycles in nature and the universe. The piece is based on a time measurement of a breathing of a performer. The ratio between inhaling and exhaling generates a metric module projected on multiple scales, from relationship between individual sounds and sections to the large-scale design. Breathing through a saxophone at the beginning of the piece models the first and all of the subsequent 5 sections, each developing different aspect of saxophone sound. Following the 6 stages of the music composition, choreography is based on 6 different expressions in a forward motion of the actress. While she slowly moves across the stage, her shadow is being projected and sustained on a screen eventually creating a shape of a crescent and thus visually mapping the generator of the piece: a breathing cycle.
